چکیده

Particle mixing and irrigation of the seabed by benthic fauna (bioturbation) have major impacts on ecosystem functions such as remineralization organic matter sediment-water exchange. As a tribute to Prof. Gaston Desrosiers Nereis Park association, eighteen laboratories carried out collaborative experiment acquire global snapshot particle reworking polychaete Hediste diversicolor at 16 sites surrounding Northern Atlantic. Organisms soft sediments were collected during May – July different geographical locations and, using common laboratory protocol, particulate fluorescent tracers (‘luminophores’) used quantify transport over 10-day period. was quantified maximum penetration depth (MPD), diffusive coefficients (Db), non-local (r). Non-local (reflecting centimeter scale steps) ranged from 0.4 15 yr?1, not correlated across with any measured biological (biomass, biovolume) or environmental parameters (temperature, grain size, matter). Maximum depths (MPD) averaged ~10.7 cm (6.5–14.5 cm), similar average bioturbation inferred short-lived radiochemical tracers. MPD also measures size (individual biomass), but increased decreased temperature. Biodiffusion (Db) inversely individual biomass (size) directly temperature range (Q10 ~ 1.7; 5–21 °C). The data comparable in magnitude rates reported for localized H. populations confirmed some all correlations between sediment variables found previous studies. results imply that activities species single location can be generally extrapolated conditions.

Toxicity and bioaccumulation of sediment-associated silver nanoparticles in the estuarine polychaete, Nereis (Hediste) diversicolor.

In this study, the toxicities of sediment-associated silver added to sediment as commercially available silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs, 20 and 80 nm) and aqueous Ag (AgNO3) to the estuarine polychaete, Nereis (Hediste) diversicolor, were investigated for both individual and subcellular endpoints after 10 d of exposure. Both Ag NP types were characterized in parallel to the toxicity studies and fo...

Energetics of burrowing by the cirratulid polychaete Cirriformia moorei.

Burrowing through marine sediments has been considered to be much more energetically expensive than other forms of locomotion, but previous studies were based solely on external work calculations and lacked an understanding of the mechanical responses of sediments to forces applied by burrowers. Muddy sediments are elastic solids through which worms extend crack-shaped burrows by fracture. Here...

acute effects of cadmium and copper on cytochemical responses in the polychaete hediste diversicolor

this study investigated the cytochemical responses in hediste diversicolor exposed to the environmental concentrations of cadmium (1µm cd), copper (1µm cu) and to their equimolar mixture for 48h. lysosomal membrane stability (lms), neutral lipids (nl) level, lipofuscin (lf) content and ca2+-atpase activity were determined as early subcellular biomarkers of toxicity. the biomarker battery pointe...
